Privacy: what stays on your Mac

Recording, editing, captions, text recognition and export all run on your Mac. Here is what can leave it.

On your Mac

These run on your Mac and never send your recordings anywhere:

  • Recording and screenshots.
  • Editing, zooms and export.
  • Captions and transcripts.
  • Text recognition and Hide sensitive info.
  • The narration voice.
  • Turning your spoken asks into words, in the Lumi panel and the Library.

Covers that belong in the picture

Draw a privacy mask on a paused video, or accept a suggestion from Find sensitive text. In the mask card, choose Blur, Pixelate or Solid. Solid makes a matched cover. It is one solid colour, taken on every frame from just outside the cover, so it blends with the page as it scrolls. It never uses the pixels it hides, and it is always fully opaque. Under Fill, choose Shaded for the older cover, which shades the average colour of what it hides. Choose Custom to pick a colour yourself, such as Black for a plain black-out.

When you have played a mask through and it hides everything, turn on Reviewed. Any change to the mask turns this off. Masks that are not reviewed appear in the review before export.

When you export, Slyve reads the saved file back at the frames that have solid covers. If a cover did not hold in the file, the export stops and the file is not saved.

Groups of covers

To hide a repeated row, such as a customer’s name, email and plan, group its covers. Shift-click each cover on the paused picture, or select a Privacy chip that holds several, then choose Group in the mask card and type a name, such as “Customer row”. A group always uses a solid cover, never a blur, and shows for the same time from its first frame to its last, with no fade. Dragging one cover or using the arrow keys moves the whole group. Resizing changes only that cover. Next row copies the group one row down as a new group, such as “Customer row 2”. Ungroup separates the covers again. Any change to a group turns off Reviewed for its covers.

What can leave your Mac

  • A share link. Only the video you choose to share is uploaded. You can delete it any time. See Share a link.
  • An editable project. A .slyve file you choose to send includes recording media. Check its privacy options before sending it. See Share an editable project.
  • A bug report. You see the whole report before you send it, and choose what goes with it.
  • Your account. Your e-mail address, for sign-in, the trial and your licence.
  • Usage data. Which features are used, never what is in your recordings. Turn it off with Share anonymous usage data in Settings › General › Privacy.
  • Crash reports. What went wrong in the app, with names, paths and keys removed on your Mac first. They never contain your recordings.

Your assistant

When you connect an assistant, it can read your projects and frames from them. What it reads goes wherever that assistant sends it, under its own terms. Turn off All projects in Settings › Lumi › Other apps to limit it to the project open in the editor, or turn off Let other apps and agents use Slyve to stop it.
